Different Types of Resumes: Which is Right For You?

There are several types of resumes that serve different purposes. It is important to understand what type of resume will best highlight your knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Traditional Reverse Chronological

This resume focuses on your job history. It starts with your most recent position. This resume is great for those who have several years of experience in the career field.

Functional Resume

A functional resume highlights your skills rather than your job history. This resume requires some strong networking to get on the desk of a hiring manager.

Combination Resume 

This resume combines the functional and traditional resume. You start off with a focus on accomplishments related to the job and then note your job history. This can be great if you are switching careers, have gaps in your resume, or do not have a strong history in a career field.

Networking Resume

This is a short resume (one side of a page) that is used at networking events. It is not as common as it once as you can also hand out business cards with a link to your LinkedIn profile. This type of resume is great to use at a networking event such as a job fair.

Graphic or Infographic Resume 

This type of resume uses pictures, charts, and/or graphs to highlight your accomplishments. It is most often used in careers that require the ability to create such as marketing or arts.

Curriculum Vitae (CV)

A curriculum vitae, better known as a CV,  A CV is a more extensive and is used in academic and scientific fields. It highlights your qualifications such as publications and education.

Non-traditional Resume

A non-traditional resume may be a video, webpage, or sample of your work. This type of resume may be ideal for a highly competitive position that requires unique skills.
